Why GEO is getting more important than SEO

Customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini instead of scrolling Google. Here is why GEO is gaining on SEO, and why you still need both.

For twenty years, getting found online meant one thing: ranking on Google. That's still important — but a growing share of buying questions never reach a list of links. People ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini instead, and get an answer with two or three names in it. That's why GEO (generative engine optimization) is gaining on classic SEO.

The audience has moved

The AI assistants are no longer niche tools. They're used by a large part of the internet:

1B+

Gemini app monthly users (Google, Aug 2026)

900M

ChatGPT weekly users (OpenAI, Feb 2026)

~100M

Perplexity monthly users (Apr 2026)

Many of these questions are the same ones people used to type into Google — “best dentist near Main Street”, “which CRM for a small agency” — but now phrased as full questions, and answered without a single click.

Five reasons GEO matters more every month

1. The answer replaces the click

In classic search, ranking fifth still brings some visitors. In an AI answer, if you're not named, you get nothing — and you may never know the customer existed.

2. There's room for only a few names

A results page shows ten links and lets you scroll on. An AI answer usually recommends two to five businesses. The competition for those spots is tighter than for page one.

3. AI picks on trust, not just keywords

Assistants choose the businesses they can describe with confidence: clear facts on your website, and other sources that confirm them. A page stuffed with keywords doesn't help if the assistant still can't tell what you do and where.

4. Google itself is answering with AI

Google now shows AI-written answers above the links for many searches. Even customers who never open ChatGPT increasingly meet an AI answer first.

5. Early movers win

Most businesses have never checked what AI says about them. Those who fix the basics now — clear facts, direct answers, structured data, mentions elsewhere — get named while the competition is still invisible.

SEO vs GEO at a glance

  • Goal: SEO aims for a high ranking; GEO aims for a mention inside the answer.
  • Result: SEO brings a click; GEO brings a recommendation, often with no click at all.
  • Measuring: SEO has rankings and traffic; GEO means asking the assistants your customers' questions and counting how often you're named.
  • Signals: both need clear pages and good basics; GEO adds quotable answers, consistent facts across the web and access for AI crawlers.

What to do now

Start by finding out where you stand: ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your customers ask, without your name in them. Then follow our step-by-step guide, or read how GEO works first. SEO Joe checks your SEO, GEO and AEO in one go and tells you what to fix first.

Questions and answers

Is GEO more important than SEO?
GEO is growing faster in importance, because more buying questions are now asked to AI assistants. But SEO is still the foundation: the assistants find businesses through search, so you need both.
Will SEO disappear?
No. Google still handles a huge amount of search, and AI assistants rely on search results to find pages. What changes is the goal: not only ranking, but being named in the answer.
Why is GEO harder than SEO?
An AI answer names only a few businesses, and it varies between assistants and from day to day. There is no page two to fall back on, and you can't see your position without asking the assistants yourself.
Where should a business start with GEO?
Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, write one clear sentence about what you do, for whom and where, add an FAQ with direct answers, and check what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini say about you today.
